Cheerful Amanzimtoti man turns 90

A Poinsetta Park Retirement Home resident celebrated his 90th birthday with a family lunch, followed by a relaxed party at their home.

REST and relaxation are part of the course each day as Philippus Frederick Maré celebrated his 90th birthday with a day out for lunch with family. Still spry as ever, and about as fit as a 90-year-old can be, Philippus spends his days reading and relaxing in his Amanzimtoti retirement home with his loving wife, Dawn Maré. The celebrations continued at their home in Poinsettia Park where some of the residents and staff joined in to wish him, have a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

He remains sharp in his old age, and kept conversation lively and full of humour. Philippus said, “Once you get near the nineties, it goes like that. The only thing that gives me trouble is my ears.” Dawn joked, “You don’t get birthday cards for 90-year-olds,” and added that the pair will call the SUN back in another 10 years for Philippus’ 100th birthday.

He was born on a farm just outside of Springs, Gauteng. The pair have two children, Clifford Maré and Elaine Rockwell, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He worked as a fitter and turner in Prospecton. He has run the Comrades Marathon four times, walked it twice and even cycled it.
