Umnini Community Trust appoints new accountant

The new accountant's appointment follows accusations that his predecessor misappropriated funds from the Umnini Community Trust.

UMGABABA’s Umnini Community Trust has appointed a new accountant to manage its financial records following the departure of the previous one, who was accused of financial mismanagement.

The Trust’s chairperson, Busani Luthuli, and the secretary, Sipho Msimango, welcomed Simphiwe Hlengwa on his official starting date on June 2. Msimango said Hlengwa’s job will be to look after the community’s funds and manage day-to-day spending.

“What is good about Hlengwa is that he comes from this community. Our chairperson has reduced the accountant’s salary costs from R600 000 to R200 000 per annum, which is going to save the Trust a lot of money,” said Msimango.

Msimango said the previous board did not follow the correct procedure when employing the previous accountant, which led to millions of rands being misappropriated.

“Hlengwa has been strongly advised to be honest in his work,” said Msimango.
