Ndabezinhle Mvune, Simiso Mthimkhulu and Thamsanqa Msabala, all taxi drivers, assaulted Grotius and left him for dead in front of the complex where he lived in August 2021.
Grotius, who was off-duty, had been out walking his dog when he noticed a van with three occupants parked next to the complex. After approaching it to investigate its suspicious circumstances, its occupants alighted and assaulted him heavily using an iron object before fleeing.

After extensive treatment at the hospital, Grotius’ 40-year service in the police force came to an end, and he has been on medical pension since 2023.

His wife, Katinka, said she was glad that the chapter had come to an end even though they continue to suffer the consequences of the assault.
