Folweni’s confessed ‘killer’ appears in court

It is alleged that the deceased had found a new boyfriend who would regularly phone Masuku and mock the size of his manhood.

MDUDUZI Masuku (32), who confessed to hacking his girlfriend to death with a panga in Folweni in 2024, appeared in the Umbumbulu Regional Court on August 21. He was represented by a State-appointed attorney, as per his request.

After handing himself to the police and confessing to killing Bongekile Mkhize, 32, on January 5, 2024, Masuku told the court during his first court appearance that he would be representing himself as he intended to plead guilty. He later changed his mind and requested an attorney after the magistrate told him there were legal terms that he would not understand should he represent himself.

It is alleged that the deceased had found a new boyfriend who would regularly phone Masuku and mock the size of his private part. On the day Mkhize died, a source told the South Coast SUN that she had gone out with her other boyfriend, and when he brought her back to her home in the early hours of Sunday, Masuku was allegedly hiding in the yard, waiting.

“As the passenger side door opened, Masuku leapt from where he was hiding and dragged his girlfriend out. He started hacking her with the panga, and her screams alerted people who were indoors, including her 12-year-old son. They opened the door and witnessed what was happening, but retreated indoors for safety reasons. The driver of the car fled on foot. Witnesses said as Masuku was hacking her, he was asking how her new boyfriend knew the size of his manhood, as he had never undressed in front of him,” said the source.

Masuku’s recently-appointed legal representative indicated that he will apply for bail. The matter was postponed to September 3, to allow for Masuku’s attorney to be handed the statements that have been made.
