Take a walk with the SUN: Learning about local art [Video]

Join SUN journalist, Nikhil Gopichand, as he learns more about one of the oldest clubs in Amanzimtoti, and how it has evolved over the years.

MAKING art, be it drawing, painting or sculpting, often seems like its own language altogether. Hurdle upon hurdle standing in one’s way before being able to say, “I’m an artist.” For this week’s walk, I, Nikhil Gopichand, journalist for the South Coast Sun, explored Totally Art Club’s creations and chatted with chairperson, Patricia McCann.

An art exhibition, which concluded on October 8, featured various paintings by club members. The exhibition included a silent auction where participants could bid on paintings donated by local artists. The proceeds went to the Jona Vaughan Home for the Disabled. In addition there were raffles for the home and Amanzimtoti SPCA for those who wished to assist the organisations for a lower stake, offering the winners each a chance to walk away with a painting.

What can artists that want to join expect?

McCann explained that due to many younger people taking up art and joining the art club, it went through a relatively recent name change from Upper South Coast Art Association to Totally Art Club.

“We’ve made sure that everybody that comes in has the opportunity to learn something new. With all the fresh faces that have joined our club, they each bring with them a whole array of different genres of art. It makes it so exciting because everybody learns from each other and everybody is able to share,” said McCann.

On every alternate month, a demonstrator comes in to offer a masterclass to club members. Every other month, there are creative classes where a new skill or technique is built upon.
