Promoting peace through posters with local Lions [Pics]

Peace and art were put together as learners from schools in Amanzimtoti submitted their posters for a Lions International competition.

THE unique and creative vision of Amanzimtoti youth was channeled through their art for this year’s iteration of the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Kingsburgh Lions Club and the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti decided on their respective winners at a cocktail evening on October 22 at the House of Nations Church.

Esmé Nel, of Kingsburgh Lions Club, explained that the contest tasks children aged 11 to 13 to share what peace means to them through art. She said that this year’s theme was “Together As One”.

The pair of Lions clubs sponsored the contest in local schools, giving young people the opportunity to be recognised at local and international levels. About 50 submissions were received, and with the help of Totally Art Club serving as judges, two winners emerged.

The winners, Kathryn Pretorius, of Amanzimtoti Primary School, and Hayley Govender, of Warner Beach Preparatory School, will have their art stacked up against other schoolchildren across the district, country, and potentially internationally for a chance at a $5000 prize.

Hayley said that while she was nervous about her design and the stiff competition she would face, she felt more determined to finish it the more she worked at it.

“I see it as a representation of how youth can come together to make a community that’s better for the future when we work together as one,” said Hayley.
