Take a walk with the SUN: A glimpse into Toti’s music scene [Video]

Take a walk with SUN journalist, Nikhil Gopichand, and join the audience at the local open mic, held monthly at Warnadoone Ski Boat Club.

MUSIC connects people through generations. Musicians themselves often start off by playing anywhere they can and a pair of musicians in Amanzimtoti, The Golden Super Hawks, started an open mic to uplift the local music scene.

For this week’s walk, join me, Nikhil Gopichand, as I peer into Amanzimtoti’s burgeoning music scene.

This time around a new act, C-Thru, took to the stage and were impressive, taking old rock classics and making each their own. There were also older acts such as Jam and Cheese, featuring banjo and harmonica-wielding Mark Daniels, Jarred van Reenen and Alison Daniels.

Another new act took avant-garde to another level, bringing a flute, an acoustic guitar, and an eclectic, unique sound to the open mic.

Bandmates and friends, Jon-Claude Stirling and Shane Strachan, of The Golden Super Hawks, started the open mic around one-and-a-half years ago, calling on local musicians, new and experienced alike, to take to the stage.

Stirling said that he had his start at open mics and it equipped him with the stage experience and confidence to perform in front of large audiences. He encouraged up-and-coming artists to come out and experience what the open mic is all about on the last Thursday of every month.
