Areas to be affected by Kingsburgh substation’s electricity outage

ETHEKWINI Municipality’s Energy Management Directorate has announced that it will implement rotational electricity load-reduction in areas fed from the Kingsburgh substation from January 26.

These power outages are to be implemented over three weeks, during the evening peak demand period from 17:00 to 21:00.
In a statement, eThekwini said the outages will be applied on a rotational basis in the affected areas, and therefore, the same customers will not be affected every day.
“This operational constraint is due to the urgent requirement to perform maintenance on the 132 kV transformer circuit breaker at the Kingsburgh substation. Under normal operating conditions, the substation’s load is shared between two transformers. However, during the planned maintenance of one transformer’s circuit breaker, the entire load will be carried by the remaining transformer,” read the statement.
It added that load forecasts indicate that the electricity demand during the evening peak will exceed the safe operating capacity of the remaining transformer.
“To protect critical electrical infrastructure and to maintain a stable and reliable electricity supply, temporary load reduction is therefore necessary,” it said.
