Business fair gives SMMEs a chance to thrive

The Durban Business Fair was officially opened by the Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni.

THE Durban Business Fair (DBF) hosted small businesses from around the eThekwini Metro, including the South Coast, and cemented its legacy as one of the City’s most powerful economic empowerment platforms.

Held from April 29 to May 2 at the Durban Exhibition Centre and the Durban International Convention Centre, the fair was officially opened by the Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni. The City’s Economic Development and Planning Committee’s chairperson, Thembo Ntuli, was also part of the opening proceedings.

In its 28th year, eThekwini spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, said a total of 18 743 visitors attended the exhibition, engaging directly with entrepreneurs and driving sales and partnerships.

One of the micro, small and medium enterprises (SMMEs) exhibiting its work was Lovu townships’ Sibocali Foods.

Beyond sales, Ntuli said the fair delivered life-changing opportunities, including a total of R550 000 in bursaries to 10 young entrepreneurs to pursue diplomas in customer management. She said the DBF is a testament to what can be achieved when government, private sponsors, and communities unite with a shared purpose.

“As eThekwini Municipality, we remain committed to building an inclusive and thriving economy. Over 27 years, we have invested more than R400m, supported over 40 000 businesses, and contributed to over 22 000 jobs. This year, we hosted almost 500 exhibitors and thousands of visitors,” said Ntuli.

Ndabeni, also the District Development Model champion for eThekwini, reaffirmed that SMMEs are the backbone of the economy, driving job creation and inclusion.

“When we buy local, we support jobs and invest in South Africa’s future,” said Ndabeni.
