Anti-illegal immigrant activist’s Umbumbulu home burns down

The homeowner said he has been living in the area since 2014, and is on good terms with his neighbours.

NGIZWE Mchunu, a leading figure in the ongoing campaign against illegal immigrants, said he does not believe that his Umbumbulu, Mdumezulu home was burned by foreigners.

Mchunu said this after three thatched rondavels at his home mysteriously burned down on May 10 while he and his wife were away.

Through his work with the March and March movement, Mchunu has had many confrontations with immigrants around the country while pushing for them to return to their countries of origin.

Some of the reasons put forth by the March and March movement for expelling undocumented aliens are that they contribute to crime, and they drain the country’s resources as they send back to their countries whatever income they make in South Africa untaxed.

Mchunu said on the day his home burned, the only people at home were his sister-in-law, his child, and a domestic helper. His wife was in Cape Town, and he was in Johannesburg.

“While there, I received a call from my wife saying something terrible was happening at home. I then called my sister-in-law, who said three men had come earlier and asked for me. When they were told I was not home, they left. After a while, they saw smoke coming from one of the rondavels,” said Mchunu.

While they tried using water to put out the fire, Mchunu said those attempts were in vain as it was too windy.

He said he has been living in the area since 2014, and he is on good terms with his neighbours. He also did not know if he had enemies who could resort to burning down his home. No one was harmed during the incident.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said an enquiry case has been registered for investigation.

“The cause of the fire has not been established yet,” said Netshiunda.
