The large-scale multidisciplinary exercise, called Operation Gijima, targeted crime hotspots, by-law violations and business compliance.

In a statement, eThekwini Municipality said the operation formed part of the ongoing effort to strengthen law enforcement, combat criminal activity and ensure adherence to municipal regulations.

“Particular attention was given to foreign-owned tuckshops where compliance inspections focused on business licensing requirements, public health standards, utility connections and adherence to municipal by-laws. Immigration authorities detained eight foreign nationals who were unable to provide documentation confirming their legal status in the country,” read the statement.

The suspects will remain in custody pending the completion of the relevant legal and immigration processes. eThekwini further said similar multidisciplinary operations will continue across the South Coast and other parts of the municipality.
