Two years of the iconic Warnadoone Ski Boat Club open mic

Warnadoone Ski Boat Club celebrated two years of its monthly open mic music nights, bringing in new acts, experienced ones and a comedian to the fold.

IT HAS been a testing ground for new talent, a comfortable stage for tenured artists to share their music and bare their souls, and a breeding ground for budding bands.

The Warnadoone Ski Boat Club’s monthly open mic celebrated its two-year anniversary on June 25, with young bands finding their voices, old bands stretching their legs and even a comedian cracking jokes.

Shane Strachan, founder of the open mic and a talented musician in his own right, said that during the past two years, the open mic has grown into more than a monthly music night.

“It’s become a platform where local talent can gain confidence, develop their skills, and perform in front of a supportive audience. We’ve watched many of our regular performers grow into polished musicians while also welcoming a steady stream of first-time performers and new bands,” said Strachan.

He explained that one of the most rewarding aspects has been seeing the variety of talent take to the stage.

“We’ve had first-time band debuts, a stand-up comedian, rap performances including Mielie introducing Afrikaans rap to the event, and many young artists who have gone from being nervous on their first night to becoming crowd favourites. Every open mic brings something different, and it’s exciting to see more people finding the confidence to share their talent.,” said Strachan.

Its celebratory two-year anniversary showcased the diversity that has become the hallmark of the open mic. Strachan expressed a great deal of pride in the event’s evolution over time and looks forward to seeing more local talent take the stage in the years ahead.
