Sharks thrill Amanzimtoti rugby fans

The Sharks mascot, Sharkie, and ARC's Malan, interacted with fans before the main match at 14:30, the Sharks versus the President's XV side.

RUGBY enthusiasts descended on Hutchison Park on July 4 as the Amanzimtoti Rugby Club (ARC) celebrated its 80th anniversary by hosting The Sharks for a game against the President’s XV team.

The South Coast Warriors (SCW) from Port Shepstone were also part of the festival, with their first and second teams facing ARC.

Rugby fans started arriving early to soak up the good weather before the first match kicked off at 13:00, with SCW and ARC second teams locking horns. Toti proved too strong for the visitors, easily winning the match 54-10.

The Sharks’ famous mascot, Sharkie, and ARC’s Malan interacted with young fans before the kick-off of the match everyone had come to see at 14:30, the Sharks versus the President’s XV side. The match started on a high gear, with the Sharks asserting dominance from the first whistle and leading throughout.

Even though the game ended 59-5 in favour of the Sharks, it exposed the local players to top-class rugby and gave them an insight into how professional players approach the game.

The last game to kick off at 16:00 was the first team encounter of Toti against SCW. The game ended 31-21 in favour of Toti.

In a statement, ARC president Dr Mike Mthethwa said as the club celebrates 80 years of history, it looks forward to an exciting future, and carrying forward the values and traditions that have made ARC a place many proudly call home.

“This remarkable journey has only been possible because of the dedication of those who have worn our colours, served in leadership, supported from the sidelines, and contributed behind the scenes. To our executives, thank you for your leadership and vision. To our players, past and present, thank you for your commitment, determination, and pride in representing our club. To our loyal supporters, your unwavering encouragement and passion continue to inspire us every season,” read the statement.
