The department’s MEC, Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, visited Vuka Supply Farm, which is run by Mondli Shangase, on July 8 and was impressed by the transformation of a school into a thriving agricultural enterprise.

The purpose of kaMadlopha-Mthethwa’s visit was to assess agricultural activities and support provided to farmers. As part of the department’s farmer support programme, the site previously received a tractor, fertiliser, and 10 tunnels, which were erected to boost production. KaMadlopha-Mthethwa said she wanted to ensure that the donated equipment and inputs are used to increase food production and create jobs for the Umbumbulu community.

“We are observing a great value on our R3.6m investment. This project features nearly all the necessities a farmer would need. This project will become a flagship programme for others to follow,” said kaMadlopha-Mthethwa.

The department has placed five agricultural graduates at the farm to provide technical support and to ensure the sustainability of the project.

Shangase expressed his gratitude to the department for all the assistance he has received.

“We will do our best to keep the business running. Our goal is to fight food insecurity and reduce unemployment in this area. Our fresh produce and grain products are already being supplied to big retailers around Durban,” said Shangase.

The MEC issued a directive to the district directors around the province that this project should be a model to be used in other districts where unused schools can be repurposed for agricultural projects.
