Jean Pierre van Niekerk, Lloyd Clive Ramsbottom, Banele Nsele, Njabulo Dlamini, Tavolin Chetty and Johan Blokker appeared in the Chatsworth Regional Court, where they are facing charges relating to Edwards’ death.
Van Niekerk, Ramsbottom, Nsele and Dlamini, who were patients at Tetelestai Recovery Centre (TRC) in Winklespruit, were arrested in June 2025 and were granted bail the following month. Blokker, who was TRC’s non-executive director, was arrested in February, while Chetty joined others on the dock in March when he made his first appearance.
Edwards died from severe physical trauma and a brutal beating on April 9, 2025, when his bloody, half-clothed body were discovered in a large pool of blood on a neighbouring retirement home property after he allegedly checked himself out from TRC. The accused have denied any involvement in Edwards’ death.
Private investigator Brad Nathanson, who was hired by Edwards’ family to investigate the death, said the first four accused had acted as monitors at the rehabilitation centre, while one of the last two acted as an “enforcer”.

“These individuals were not simply volunteers. They were entrusted with responsibilities over vulnerable patients while TRC received payment from patients’ families for their treatment and care,” said Nathanson.
TRC subsequently shut down after the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development cancelled its conditional registration following an extensive departmental investigation.
The rehab’s director, Donovan de Klerk, has maintained that the facility always operated on the right side of the law and denied its involvement in Edward’s death.
The accused will make their next court appearance on January 18, 2027.
