Made up mostly of pensioners, the group also consisted of younger people who had signed up to be part of the fun excursion. The brains behind the outing, Vee Yesudas, Elizabeth Lemmon, Dees Chetty, and Chris du Plessis, were pleased by the turnout.
After catching the 08:35 train at Winklespruit Station, the visitors disembarked at Durban, where “Peoplemover” buses took them to the harbour, where they enjoyed boat rides. They also made their way back to Winklespruit in a train, with the visible security inside the trains making everyone feel safe and at ease.
Interest in train rides came after Chetty started publishing videos on Facebook, which generated interest in a few residents, most of whom had not been in a train in over 30 years. Chetty’s videos have shown how clean, safe, and affordable the trains are.
Lemmon said there was another outing to Durban earlier this year with fewer people, visiting the Botanical Gardens, the Holocaust Museum, and North Beach. She said the trips are a great way of meeting new people.
