Schools around Amanzimtoti recently celebrated World Read Aloud day, promoting literacy to local learners.

EACH year, on the first Wednesday of February, World Read Aloud Day is celebrated internationally. It was created by a non-profit organisation, LitWorld, to bring people and communities together through the power of words. The yearly tradition captivated children at schools across Amanzimtoti.

Local author and illustrator, Jennifer Carrol, took a trip to Warner Beach Preparatory School’s junior campus for World Read Aloud Day, where she did a reading of her book, Sleepover at Grandma: Gabriel the Giraffe. The children were enthralled at the book and a few lucky children walked away with their own copy. Photo: Nicola Uglietti.

Among the schools that celebrated the day was Doon Heights Primary School, which made the day extra special with a school-wide reading activity. Senior learners spent time reading to and with the junior grades, creating a joyful and meaningful shared reading experience and heartwarming scenes for teachers and learners alike.

The initiative was such a success that the school has decided to make it a monthly event. The school’s Liesl Kroukamp said that, along with fostering a love for reading, the programme encourages interaction between grades and strengthens a positive whole-school ethos.
