Toti Primary scoops sustainability honours

AMANZIMTOTI Primary School has cemented its reputation as an environmental champion after scooping top honours at an awards ceremony in Howick on February 14.

The school was named the most sustainable school in the province for 2025 at the Nature Connect Sustainable Schools Awards, recognising its ongoing commitment to environmental education and eco-friendly practices.
In addition to the top accolade, Amanzimtoti Primary received several certificates of excellence for its wide-ranging sustainability initiatives.
The school earned a certificate of excellence in the Marine and Coast category, acknowledging its regular beach clean-ups, awareness campaigns and learner-driven activities aimed at protecting the coastline.
It was also recognised in the Biodiversity Network category for its efforts to cultivate indigenous gardens and promote environmental awareness among learners. Learners are actively involved in understanding local ecosystems, planting medicinal flora and applying permaculture principles to grow vegetable gardens that support biodiversity.
A third certificate of excellence was awarded in the Energy and Climate Change category, highlighting projects such as the installation of solar panels, wind turbine initiatives, studies in alternative energy and the use of energy-efficient lighting across the school.
The school further received a certificate for Celebrating Environmental Days, demonstrating its commitment to keeping environmental awareness at the forefront of its mind throughout the year.
Capping its achievements, Amanzimtoti Primary was awarded a three-star certificate of sustainability for excellence across three key focus areas.
The school said the recognition reflects the collective effort of learners, teachers and the wider school community in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
