Magabheni and Sheshisa schools celebrate World Book Day

MAGABHENI and Sheshisa primary schools joined thousands of other schools across the country in celebrating World Book Day on April 23.
Both schools are based in Magabheni township and fall under the Umlazi district. Learners from both schools spent the day showcasing the importance of the reading culture and igniting the spark to reading and writing daily.

The schools are also part of a pilot project that is supported by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, in collaboration with Universal Learning Solutions, which aims to strengthen the English literacy skills using the Jolly Phonics synthetic programme. Jolly Phonics is a fun, play-based, interactive method using a multisensory approach to develop the reading proficiency of young learners. The method focuses on recognition of sounds and words in an interactive manner using different strategies of sounding, blending and segmenting using actions, rhymes, stories and songs.
Dr Daisy Reddy, the country director for Universal Learning Solutions, said the programme targets early grade learners. She said the project has been expanded thanks to the generosity of the NFS Foundation, an organisation committed to improving literacy outcomes in schools.
“Looking at the lively engagement of the teachers and learners reading together and celebrating this special day, this helps our learners to build confidence, imagination, and a love for stories that lasts far beyond one day,” said Reddy.
Literacy murals were unveiled at the schools to serve as a constant daily reminder of the importance of celebrating the culture of reading, thinking, and growing stronger minds.
