While Kingsway in Warner Beach is a scenic drive in the mornings, motorists run the gauntlet after dark, with drunk drivers become a norm on this stretch of roads, especially at weekends

THE stretch of Kingsway along Warner Beach offers some of the most scenic daytime driving in the city of Durban.
Heading north in the mornings, you would be hard-pressed to find as exquisite a sight to behold as the cascading Indian Ocean as it beats down on Toti’s shoreline, whether it’s a serene, unfettered backdrop or a windswept ocean that’s made up of white-horses galore.
Gazing at this stunning sight can be a bit tricky from one’s car, however, owing to the fact Kingsway is a major route used by many, and motorists need to keep their wits about them to stay safe.
Using this stretch of suburban road after dark – and moreso at weekends – however, is becoming a matter of taking one’s life into one’s hands.
Drunk driving is a standard, run of the mill occurence along Kingsway every weekend, and it’s now as often as every fortnight that this newspaper is reporting on the end consequence of such irresponsible and reckless actions. Blaming the eateries and pub-type establishments that dot Kingsway is missing the point.
The patrons who frequent these places and then insist on driving despite their intoxicated condition are the criminals in all of this.
Drunk driving wrecks lives, it is a callous and selfish act that leaves every other road user at the mercy of that person’s blood alcohol level. Too many have already needlessly felt the impact of these loaded gun drivers – if you have no regard for yourself, stop before the life of an innocent person is wrecked forever.
