Zondo renaming insults Zulu King Shaka

If I were Zulu I would be furious

EDITOR – Apart from the fact that no road should be named after a terrorist, the change of the name ‘Kingsway’ is a direct insult to Zulu history.

When white settlers traded with King Shaka, they travelled on horseback along a trail on the coast line.

It is this very path that was named after the Zulu king, hence ‘Kings Way’. With Shaka being a prominent figure during the time of his reign, it was very appropriate to name the trail ‘Kings Way’. Sometime during history the name became one word Kingsway, as in Shaka’s way.

This government is now so hell-bent on getting rid of English names they probably think it is a settler’s surname. Besides, the ANC will stick it to Inkhatha anyway they can. If I were Zulu I would be furious because it’s an insult to KwaZulu-Natal and its heritage of which King Shaka was very much a part.

I too will never accept Zondo Road as I feel strongly it should either remain as it is or name it ‘Shaka’s Way’ so that the ignorant authorities get acquainted with history.
