EDITOR – Just my thoughts on the Christmas/New Year in Toti.
I have to say I am appalled at the lack of police presence on the Toti promenade on 16 December.
I witnessed some horrific crimes within a few hours that I am embarrassed to say leave me cold and shaking to the core. This despite the fact that we had to go to Metro Police to get a permit to use our road when there were no boom gates erected on the specified days. The number of by-laws that were broken is unspeakable.
What a crime it is to witness this during the festive season. I feel for those from upcountry who have spent money to come to the coast for a holiday, only to be subjected to this barbaric behaviour. No wonder no-one wants to come to Amanzimtoti on holiday. I personally witnessed 10 stabbings, five muggings and a guy selling beer on the beach. He was well stocked with 10 crates. Not to mention the use of the promenade as a public toilet.
And again the same on Boxing Day. Although the weather deterred some from venturing to the beach, those who arrived in their droves, had to deal with a lack of human decency and total disregard for public property! And once again, no booms or police presence. It’s sad that those of us living here had to go out of town to avoid this mayhem.
So much for a fireworks-free zone. Toti main beach sounded like a warzone on New Year’s Eve and when I phoned Metro to report it, as instructed by the authorities, all I got was a ‘huh’ on the other end of the phone. I noticed one Metro car driving up and down the promenade at one point, but alas that didn’t last long. I suppose I had high hopes that something would be done.
Living on the beach sure has its disadvantages in holiday season. We pay our rates and taxes and yet these people come and cause utter chaos for all.
