Senior player’s win crowns UGC’s fundraising day

There were almost 120 players in the competition plus the visiting groups.

THE fundraising day held last Saturday was the 'gem in the crown' for Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC).

It was one of the most successful fundraising days the club has had in many years and it's all thanks to our loyal and supportive members, friends and visitors for their unwavering support.

There were almost 120 players in the competition plus the visiting groups, so an awesome day was had by all. UGC thanks everyone, especially all the sponsors for their generous donations and prizes.

Wednesday welcomed Hugh and Rose Lindsay to the individual stableford competition which was won by Sierd Lamminga on 40 points, counting out Barrie Taylor into second place, also on 40 points. Hot on their heels in third spot was Andy Davidge on 39 points, counting out both Piet Vermaak and Annette Thorold into fourth and fifth places respectively.

At UGC's tremendously successful fundraising day last Saturday all the visitors were warmly welcomed, too numerous to mention individually, but a special welcome was made to the Lumleys from Namibia by club captain Peter Toward at prizegiving. Playing stupendous golf for a senior player, Ken Harding together with Wally Kent, took first place on a great 50 points, with second placed Gregg Andersson and Dave Mulroy on 48 points. In third spot was Wayne Addison and Mickey Eriksen with 47 points, counting out Peter Oberholtzer and Alan Finlay into fourth place, also with 47 points. In fifth spot was Eric Morsner, partnered with John van der Spuy on 46 points.

Nearest the pins: Fourth Peter Oberholtzer, ninth Liv Mazzaro, 13th Derek Cowden and 17th Paul Nel.

The winner of the lamb raffle was Ganas Naicker, the set of irons, Bruce Sutcliffe and Gianni Ioppo won the huge bottle of wine in the auction. Congratulations to all prize winners, right down to 21st place. Big thanks to Derek and Dawn Crookes for sponsoring the lamb, Kisten (YK) Pillay for the set of irons and last but not least, Simon van den Bosch for the enormous bottle of wine.

Both the women (at Royal Durban) and the men (at Selborne) played in the Cancer Challenge regional finals. Annette Thorold came away with a second place in her division, due to some costly errors, but well done to all players who made it this far in the Cancer Challenge competition. More details in next weeks report.

Next Saturday, 31 August competition is a fourball better ball competition. Various time slots open on Sunday for social golf. Do call the office or golf shop for suitable tee times.

A reminder of the 'Zimbo Trophy' to be played on Saturday, 14 September. The time sheet is on the notice board. The format is a 'modified stableford two ball alliance', a different and challenging competition. For more details, ask Sue or Peter Boshoff.
