Beginner karate kid keen for 2015 world champs
I like the discipline, self-control and self-defense karate teaches me.
Hard work and a love for the sport has seen a beginner karateka get invited to next year’s world championship.
Arno Gerber (13), a grade 6 pupil at Kuswag Skool, joined the Amanzimtoti karate school in January when he moved to Toti to live with his grandfather Monty Peens.
“I love living in Toti, especially being so close to the beach,” he said.
In a short space of time, Arno moved from a white belt, to orange and is now a green. He also proudly wears the best student of the month belt for his fourth time this year.
He was invited by his coach, Sensei Louis to participate in the beginners category of the 15th annual shito-ryu world champship in America next year.
“I like everything about karate – the discipline, self-control and self-defense it teaches me,” said Arno.
“I also wanted to do karate and got the opportunity when my grandfather asked me what interests me.”
The world champs features over 4,000 students from 35 countries, participating in 72 categories.
“This will be my first time out of South Africa,” said Arno, who also plays rugby for his school’s first team. “I’m nervous, but excited.”
Sensei Louis has selected four students to compete next year. However, the cost is R25,000 per student which they need to raise themselves.
