Cardinals names its top baseball players

Cardinals committee would like to thank all players and coaches for their participation last season and look forward to seeing everyone back again next season.

ON Saturday, 16 August Cardinals Baseball Club held its AGM and prize-giving at Lords and Legends function room.

As there were no nominations received, the current committee remained in place with chairman Fritz Ackermann, vice chairman Keith Dempsey, tresurer Ingrid Gardner and secretary Craig Dempsey.

The prize winners for the 2013/14 season were are follows:

Major A side: Best batter Gareth Purchase, best fielder Wesley Merrick, most improved Robert Ackermann, sportsman of the year David Baker, most valuable player Mathew Larkin.

Major B side: Best batter Jono Verral, best fielder Jason Carelse, most improved Ryan Loxton, sportsman Robin Smith, most valuable player Robert Ackermann.

Promo side: Best batter Ray Merrick, best fielder Melanie Baker, most improved Brian Seach, sportsman Keith Dempsey, most valuable player Melanie Baker, ball abuse Fritz Ackermann.

Club trophies: Clubman of the year Craig Dempsey, coach of the year Paul Whitfield.

Baseball lovers can look forward to some good baseball as Amanzimtoti will be host to both the softball and baseball interprovincial tournaments being held in September and October respectively. These tournaments will be held on the main baseball field and the main oval in front of Lords and Legends and spectators can be assured of some entertaining baseball. Cardinals Promo side is looking for players, so if anyone used to play the game and would like to play social and have some fun on and off the field, call Craig on 084-500-0079.

Cardinals has been trying for a number of years to start a junior side, with no success. KZN Baseball has leagues for under 9, 12 and 15 age groups, so to the parents looking for another optional sport for their children, have them try out as the season will start in October.
