Half marathon first-timers earn their stripes

On Sunday more members made the trip to Verulam for the Gate-Rite Challenge.

HUMAN Rights Day saw athletes from both local clubs tackle the helpers’ run for the annual Dick King half marathon which is scheduled to take place next Sunday.

The Amanzimtoti Athletics Club organises this event to ensure that anyone helping with marshalling or water tables on race day also gets the chance to run the race. Runners and walkers from Run Walk For Life Amanzimtoti (RWFL) took part and the branch manager, Janine Williams, ran her first ever 21.1km half marathon. She was never alone out on the road as one of the club’s more experienced women runners, Giselle Hall kept her company all the way, ensuring they both finished in a very respectable time of 2hrs 15mins.

On Sunday more members made the trip to Verulam for the Gate-Rite Challenge. Most ran the half marathon distance where Nelly James also assisted by Mandy Willemse, managed to complete her first 21.1km event in a fantastic time of 2hrs 16mins. Elizabeth Toerien and Warren Gibson were just ahead of them in 2hrs 15mins while Edmond Luiz left them all in his dust, clocking 1hr 47mins.

RWFL’s entrants in the 42.2km were Shaun Finn, who clocked a good time of 3hrs 45mins, and Peter Moodley with 5hrs 32mins. Well done to all athletes who took part, especially the first timers.

If you would like to complete your first race, even if it is only a 5km, venture down to Amanzimtoti High School grounds any Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoon between 5pm and 6pm and have a chat or contact Janine or Lee Williams on 073-271-1514.
