THE 2015 Amanzimtoti Golf Club strokeplay championships took place over the weekend, and Mark Cowie was the ultimate winner of the men’s A division, holding his nerve right to the last hole to seal the victory.

Mark shot 73/72 for a total gross score of 145 while some of his challengers fell to bad decisions which resulted in bad holes and stopped their charge at the winner’s accolade. Second place in the A division was shared by evergreen Sadeak Khader and his league partner Kalvin van Rensburg on 149 apiece.

B division champion for the men was Patrick Cruickshank, beating Eugene Mbambo in a play-off after sharing the leader board after their 36 holes, while Craig Anderson proved that practise makes perfect, and came in with two solid rounds of golf to seal the C division win.

Women captain Jacqui Porrill showed her BMT by coming in with a fine 171 gross to win the silver division of the women’s competition, after a rather iffy first round in which she posted 88 gross. Runner-up was Charmain Stone with 173 gross, and it is rather tiring to think that Charmain has now played 157 holes of golf in less than 10 days.

The women’s bronze division winner was Gill Symons, one shot better than runner up Sue Boucher, and the women’s seniors trophy was shared between Sue Boucher, Sue Daniels and Brenda Morgan who all scored 34 points. To set the purists’ minds at rest, the senior women keep a tally of their IPS scores on day one of the championships, and these are used to determine the winner of that division.

And so the curtain falls on another club championships weekend, and thanks must go to Errol Woods and his team for providing a superb course on which to test golfers’ skills.

Hopefully by the time everyone ventures back onto the golf course for the monthly mug and KZNLGA medal and putt rounds this coming weekend, the sewage spill in the river will be a thing of the past, and the players won’t have to hold their breath while walking anywhere near the river.

On Wednesday 36 players competed in the IPS, with W Bowles taking top spot on 41 points, followed by D Smail on 39, and Tommy McNaughton in third place also on 39 but losing the count out.

The Friday competition attracted 25 players and was won by P Kroeger on 23 points for the nine holes, followed by Ian Bender and Errol Woods on 21.

At the time of writing this report, Elsune Roode was leading the Nomads SA girls junior championships being played in Paarl by 10 shots from her nearest competition. There will be more feedback on the outcome of her final round in next week’s South Coast Sun.

Call the pro shop on 031-902-4144 to book a tee off time, and as always Amanzimtoti looks forward to hosting visitors to its beautiful course.
