Calling all Toti youngsters to join nippers or niplets.
Nippers is a junior programme that introduces children aged between eight and 13-years-old to surf lifesaving.
It is a fun outdoors activity that grows a child’s confidence, teaches valuable life skills and knowledge.
“Our primary purpose is to teach children water safety and how to respect the sea,” said Amanzimtoti Lifesaving Club senior trainer, Nick du Preez.
“For nippers, the beach is the classroom. They gain confidence by passing tests in swimming, bodyboarding, beach sprints, dolphin diving, spotting a rip current and having fun with new friends.”
Even younger children can join in the fun. “Niplets are our baby nippers, aged from five to seven-years-old who already have swimming abilities. We involve them in the training fun events, as they too are our future lifesavers.”
The emphasis is on participation and having fun. Being part of a lifesaving club can be an enjoyable experience for the whole family, as parent participation is encouraged and welcomed.
“Our season runs from September to April. On cold or rainy days, we do indoor training and swim safety games.”
Training takes place on Sundays from 11am to 1pm, with mainly sea and beach activities such as surfing, bodyboarding and kneeboard paddling.
On Mondays and Wednesdays from 4.30pm to 6pm there is pool training, swim fitness and lung busters.
