Umkomaas Golf Club

THREE of Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) girls played in their second inter region match on both Saturday and Sunday, way up in Dundee.

Annette Gillett and her partner, Lass Davies who play for the Mkuhla team, white-washed their opposition 3/2 in the stableford and in the foursomes 5/3. Sabiha Bacaus and her partner Debbie du Toit (also in the Mkuhla team) won both their matches on the last hole. Congratulations to both teams who now go through to the finals at Bosch Hoek to play for the plate against the northern region. The Umdoni team also won their matches and will go through to play for the trophy in the Midlands. Unfortunately, the president’s team in which Michelle van der Merwe plays, lost over the weekend.

After the success of the women’s golf day and craft market of the previous weekend, last weekend would have sounded quite mundane by comparison. UGC did, however, have the Allerton league teams playing on Sunday together with a small group on the course as well. Unfortunately for the Victoria team, not all their players arrived to play league, so the Umkomaas team had a walk over. Not the best way to win a match – the guys would have preferred to have played but a win is a win.

Wednesday was a good day for the club as UGC welcomed the club captain from the Bluff Golf Club, Monay Pretorius together with six members Colin Govender, Leon Maritz, Zane Stobart, Frans Erdy, Kenneth Commins and Nigel Jones plus Julien le Pront who also played in the competition. The competition was the usual individual stableford and the first prize went to local, Bing Opie on a count out from second placed Roddy McGibbon, both with 39 points. In third spot was Wally Kent with 38 followed by Michelle van der Merwe in fourth place with 37.

Being the first Saturday of the month, it was the Toyota monthly medal competition. Club captain, Jimmy Spear welcomed visitors Margaret Morsner, brothers, Dean (one of UGC’s upcountry members) and Dwayne Morsner together with Lee Parker and young William Morsner at prize-giving. It was good to see the full support of the Morsner clan at the Club.

The A division was won by Barrie Taylor on a splendid 67 and the B division was, once again, won by Derek Airey, hovering on the cusp of the A division on a very good 68. Runner-up was Simon van den Bosch with a 72. The C division was a run-away win for Ken Koster on a 72 with his nearest rival, runner-up John Thompson on a 78.

The women didn’t fare much better – Lesa Vergottini took home the women’s first prize on a 75 with runner-up Bryony Rogers on an 84. The least putts prize went to Lesa who went round with only 31 putts.

The jackpot was only just won by Simon van den Bosch with 10 points but the hidden birdie (1st hole) will, once again, be carried over to next week. Even the attendance draw will be carried forward to next week as Devlyn Fraser left the club a little earlier than usual.

Next weekend, 11 June is the alliance league. Even if you are not in a designated ‘team’, call the club for a game. On Sunday, 12 June the club will host the printers league but social golf will be available after 9am.

The following week, starting on Thursday, 16 June sees the first day of the Sardine Run, which will continue until Saturday, 18 June. All at UGC look forward to welcoming all the ‘Sardine Runners’ to KZN – may the weather be in your favour with straight drives and holed putts. The three clubs involved – Umkomaas, Scottburgh and Umdoni – have worked tirelessly to make this event a success and they all hope every player has a great long weekend. Good luck and play well.

The following Thursday, 23 June UGC hosts the Natal Nomads tournament. Any golfer with an official SAGA handicap is invited to play with the Nomads on Thursday. This is a special invitation to all men – call the club on 039-973-1042 for more information.

Coming up in July, plans are afoot to have a bingo evening on Friday, 1 July as well as a car boot sale on Sunday, 3 July. The success of the last boot sale was tremendous so the invitation is out to all craft market stall holders to join in the fun. It will be held in the club’s car park so there will be plenty of space for everyone. Call the club for contact numbers.
