Bester claims vets’ top spot in Baynesfield MTB Classic

New club shirts were handed out to paid-up members

THE Mambas of Amanzimtoti Cycling Club took part in last weekend’s Safire Baynesfield MTB Classic.

To shake out the field a little before the fast-flat sections across the top of the estate, the 65km course had a mean 7km climb.

Then there was a downhill drag-race to the main road. The descent had speed, single track and a smooth-flowing plantation road which got the adrenaline going. All riders had some big climbs before experiencing single track heaven down to the river.

The river front’s single-track meanders through a short tunnel of undergrowth and trees before the last dash to the line. It was the perfect track for Hendrik Bester who managed an excellent first place on the podium in the vets category. Bester continues to get Amanzimtoti Cycling Club’s name in the papers. Not only is he riding consistently well but he has doubled his earnings as the club matches the winnings for any member who secures a podium finish while wearing the club shirt. New club shirts were handed out to paid-up members, the first one being free, boasting the club’s sponsors: Giant Toti, Thirsty Whale, Pickfords and Compraq.

Results for 65km: 10th Hendrik Bester (vet) 2.52.19, 39th Malcolm Wallace (master) 3.44.12, 47th Shaun Tischendorf (master) 3.55.05,

Results for 45km: 34th Sean Janse van Rensburg (veteran) 2.27.04, 96th Robbie Mulders (master) 3.41.12.

The other Mambas who didn’t feel like racing enjoyed the club ride organised at iNsingizi Game Lodge and Spa in Mid-Illovo. The ride started in thick mist, with slightly muddy single track and cool conditions, the latter of which did not last too long.

Nsingizi has many miles of top-notch single-track, which is paradise for mountain bikers. After plenty of climbing that takes away a few rider’s breaths, the beautiful view from the top of the mountain takes everyone’s breath away. All riders finished with a smile on their faces. After a welcome shower, another scrumptious breakfast was enjoyed by all.

The club arranges a club ride for both road and mountain bike riders every weekend. These rides are posted on their Facebook page and various WhatsApp groups. Visitors are welcome. Contact club chairman, Barry Walker on 083-459-8253 for more information.
