Bitter-sweet week marked by goodbyes at UGC

Don’t forget about the club's fun bingo night with a twist, which will be held this month.

IT was a bitter-sweet week for Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) as on Wednesday, 28 February, club members, staff and visitors spent the day with Pam Kruger who held the title as Club Secretary for over nine years. Pam’s decision to retire means she will be missed.

It was noted that Pam was tough, strict but fair, calm, hardworking and absolutely loyal to the club. She had also captained the club prior to her working days and may even return to her golf. UGC notes that this isn’t goodbye forever, as Pam will be back to visit. As the club manager Sonny says, ‘See you later Mrs K’.

UGC also bade farewell to wonderful club members, Vesa and Suzi who resigned and will return home next Tuesday.

Moving onto the sweet side of the bitter-sweet coin, Sean Prendergast celebrated his 50th birthday in true golfer style on Saturday, 3 March. A hearty round of golf with his close friends and family followed by a braai and some party games were the events of the day. Happy birthday to Sean.

Continuing with the excitement, much appreciation and thanks was given to Kurt and Erika who kindly donated their golf cart to the club.

UGC welcomes its newest and most recent club member, Michael Pretorius who played his first game on Saturday.

On to the results, where the club welcomed Allan Eriksen, Derek Cowden to Wednesday’s competition and Craig Pitt, a friend of Sean Prendergast, who played in Saturday’s competition.

UGC’s individual stableford competition on Wednesday, 28 February saw a certain T Noah claim first prize with a nett score of 44, followed by Garth Wilyman in second position with a 39 nett score and Allan Eriksen with a nett 37 coming in third.

Speeding up to Saturday, 3 March, it was game on in the monthly medal and mug competition where the winners were:

A division: Nelson Moonsamy took first place with a 72 nett score to Barrie Taylor, whose 72 nett score saw him come in second, losing on a count out.

B division: Dave Kemp claimed first position with a nett score of 69, followed by Kuben Naidoo in second place with a 72 nett score.

C division: With a 69 nett score, Graham Coxell placed first and visitor Craig Pitt was second with a 73 nett score.

In the women’s division, Lesa Vergottini claimed first place with a nett score of 72. She also claimed the jackpot hole prize as well as the least putts prize with only 32 putts overall. Second place went to Natalie Singer with a nett score of 75.

The mug winner went to Dave Kemp with Graham Coxell losing on the count out.

On Saturday, 10 March, UGC will have its fourball betterball competition. A reminder to everyone that round two of the Alliance league will now be held on Saturday, 17 March.

KidsGolf saw some new and fresh faces this week. Devlyn Fraser conducts free golf lessons every Saturday morning from 8am to 9am. Children, parents and adults are more than welcome to join. Call 039-973-1042 for more information.

Don’t forget about the club’s fun bingo night with a twist, which will be held this month. The date will be announced on UGC’s Facebook page in the next few days and in next week’s article.

Some motivation for the month, a quote by the late American golfer, William Payne Stewart: ‘A bad attitude is worse than a bad swing.’

Until next week, that’s a wrap from all at UGC. Catch you on the greens.
