Dempsey’s walkoff gives KZNBA Promo Cardinals victory over Ashley

Despite falling down by five runs in the second inning, Ashley tried to fight back.

THE KZNBA Promo Cardinals baseball team defeated Ashley 14-13 on Sunday, thanks to a walk-off single.

The game was tied at 13 with Cardinals batting in the bottom of the fifth when Craig Dempsey singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Despite falling down by five runs in the second inning, Ashley tried to fight back. They managed 10 runs in the failed comeback. Paul Cuthbert, Julian Buckels, Glenn White, Travan Martin, Brett Fields, and Nick Nel picked up RBIs to lead the rally.

Ashley got things started in the first inning when Russel Haygarth singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

Cardinals scored seven runs in the second inning. The rally was led by walks from Dale Coetzee and August Gunther, singles by Lazaro Lopez and Keith Dempsey, and a fielder’s choice by Fritz Ackermann.

Ashley scored six runs in return in the third inning. The big inning for Ashley came thanks to an error on a ball put in play by White and Fields, doubles by Martin and Nel, a single by Cuthbert, and a groundout by Buckels.

Devron Wilson was the winning pitcher for Cardinals. He went five innings, allowing 13 runs on 11 hits and striking out six. Nel took the loss for Ashley. He went one and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out three and walking zero.

Fields started the game for Ashley, allowing four hits and seven runs over two innings, striking out one.

Cardinals totaled nine hits, with Dempsey, Lopez, and Dempsey all having multiple hits.

Ashley collected 11 hits with Nel, Martin, Cuthbert, and Haygarth each collecting multiple hits for the team. Ashley tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. White led the way with four.
