Tenth Midmar Mile for local lawyer

The young woman began swimming at the age of four, when she was taken under the wing of local swimmer, Lynn Schroder, who has also completed several Midmar Miles over the years.

For most people, completing one Midmar Mile is a mammoth achievement, but for 26-year-old Priyanka Naicker, who swam her 10th mile recently, it was the start of an adventure. The young woman began swimming at the age of four, when she was taken under the wing of local swimmer, Lynn Schroder, who has also completed several Midmar Miles over the years.

Priyanka completed her first mile at the tender age of 11 and has never looked back since then.
So far, her best time has been 44 minutes, however, this year, she took it easy and enjoyed the event while still managing to complete the race in the time frame. This year, the young lawyer hoped to swim for a greater purpose and with first time swimmer, Nonto Ngcobo, the pair swam under the banner of Ubuntu.

“I actually taught Nonto how to swim. It was my greatest achievement by far, sharing a skill with another person. Completing the mile with her was the most rewarding moment in all 10 of my swims. I want to be able to share this skill with others as well,” she said proudly.

Priyanka trains twice a week at Kingspark pool and swims a mile each time.

“The principle of Ubuntu is something that I am very passionate about and it was wonderful to swim under a banner that promotes it. Swimming allows me to be more physically and mentally fit. Swimming the mile makes me feel like I can accomplish anything. It is also a great stress reduction tool. While studying through law school it definitely helped and I would encourage the youth especially to learn how to swim. And maybe one day complete the Midmar Mile as well,” she added.
