Soccer league to inspire youth has formed in Isipingo

Fighting crime through sport is what the new soccer league in Isipingo aims to do.

A NEW soccer league has launched in Isipingo, and it aims to steer the youth in the right direction and keep them occupied so they do not end up doing wrong things.

Isipingo Sport against Crime was formed in June, and Beaver Shanmogum was elected as the first chairperson of the league, which plays in a seven-a-side format. Shanmogum said the league has 10 senior teams as well as U13 and U16 teams. He said a women’s league is going to form, as well.

“A child in sport is a child out of court,” said Shanmogum, who is a former Kingsway High School soccer coach. He has also coached in the Clive Barker Soccer School.

“With the children doing nothing productive, it is easy for them to fall prey to bad influences on social media because that is where they spend most of their time. We involve them in sport, and we also ensure that they excel in school,” he said.

The coaches will visit schools to track the academic progress of the children, and if the children’s grades fall, they will be pulled off the team. He has asked business people to help with sponsorship to make the league take off successfully.
For more information on what sponsorship is needed or how to join the league, Shanmogum can be contacted on 071 456 0008.
