Umgababa Athletics Club gears up for a promising season

Umgababa athletes will kick off their season with a primary and high school athletics meet where they will race against the clock for the top spot.

AS THE Umgababa Athletics Club kicks off its new season, coach Simiso Khomo is confident his runners have the potential to produce future champions, athletes who could go on to represent the province at national championships.

The club, made up primarily of young, ambitious runners, has already made waves in the sport, earning spots in competitions across the country. Their first challenge of the season will be a primary school athletics meet on March 9, while high school athletes (ages 14–19) will compete on March 8 and 9.

Khomo is optimistic that some of his runners will qualify for the provincial track and field championships scheduled for March 21–23. However, he acknowledges that certain hurdles, such as inconsistent training attendance, limited school support, and nutritional struggles at home can affect performance.

“The 2024 season was a significant improvement over 2023. This year we will do even better,” said Khomo.

Among the standout athletes to watch this year are Andile Ngcobo, Luyanda Mkhize, and Mpilo Ngcobo. All three competed at the 2024 Athletics South Africa Cross Country Championships in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, representing KwaZulu-Natal, though none secured a medal.

One of the club’s biggest challenges remains the lack of a dedicated training facility. Sessions often take place at the club chairman’s premises or in an open space near Umgababa Shell Ultra City.

For those eager to join, the club welcomes new members free of charge — though a running licence and personal running kit are required. Interested runners can connect with Umgababa Athletics Club via Facebook to learn more.
