Madissen, who turns 15 on June 24, was one of the athletes who qualified to represent South Africa at the games. She received bronze medals in both beam and floor. She came fourth in both vault and bar.

Her mother, Roxane, travelled with her, and she said it was an incredible experience to witness Madissen competing against other children on an international stage.

“What moved me the most was watching the children from different countries interact with one another. I realised that spoken language was not needed between them; smiles, hugs, and high fives were common forms of communication. They cheered each other on, cried with each other and shared special moments. It was inspiring to watch,” said Roxane.

Madissen also made many new friends during the event.

Besides gymnastics, other sporting disciplines included track and field athletics, tennis, and table tennis.
