Youth host successful hip-hop festival

Local hip-hop artists had a platform to showcase their skills on stage in front of a responsive audience.

The KwaMakhutha youth put their town on the map with a successful third annual Kwa-Makhutha Hip-Hop Festival against Drugs and Alcohol over the festive season.

Hosted by Listen To Reason, a sub-committee of the Free Youth Development Organisation, this year’s festival proved to be the biggest yet.

“On 20 December the festival was held at Umbumbulu Campus Coastal College,” said organiser, Siyabonga Ntlola. “It was a workshop that was very informative to the local and underground hip-hop artists. We had relevant music representatives from South African Music Rights Organisation, eThekwini Music Imbizo and rapper and musician Alligator MC. They covered topics such as hip-hop elements, lyrics, music registration, publishing, artist branding and the screening of local music videos.”

The following day festival goers enjoyed awareness talks about drugs and alcohol abuse from the department of social development, Safer Cities, correctional services, Assupol and the former KwaMakhutha Comprehensive High School principal, Mr Zungu at Umkhumbi sports ground.
