Show your talent in Amanzimtoti competition

Our aim is to discover unemployed youth who have both talent and skill in the music and arts scene.

The second Rise and Shine Talent Search takes place at the Thusong Community Hall in Umnini on Saturday, 14 March. The event, open to poets, dancers, singers and music producers, is organised by the youth development organisation, Nguwe Wedwa.

The organisation was started by Mbongeleni Mzimela to discover new talent in and around the South Coast. “This is an annual programme that was started a year ago. Our aim is to discover unemployed youth who have both talent and skill in the music and arts scene. Our focus is uplifting young people from rural areas who have been told that their dreams are invalid because of where they were born and we want to change that mindset.

“Our footprint covers Umthwalume, Umlazi, Umkomaas, Umgababa, Lovu Township, Magabheni and Inkwali. These areas form part of the greater Durban Metro and Ugu districts. Umgababa has a population of about 400 000 people where the programme was implemented. This community has issues that affect the youth such as drugs, high alcohol consumption, sexual assault, teenage pregnancy and the high rate of young people affected and living with HIV/AIDS.

We want to see change, we want the youth to be active, openminded and indulge themselves in initiatives like ours, so that we see positive outcomes in the community.” Mbongeleni was invited to eNCA during Youth Month to speak about matters faced by the South African youth.
