Family living in fear

The family has had most of their trees cut down so they can see what’s happening in their back garden.

A FAMILY living in Denton Place, Mondeor, alongside the Mondeor side of Kliprivier Nature Reserve, is beyond worry after having two incidents at their home involving criminals breaking into their property.

The home owner says, “We bought our home a year ago and moved here because of the beautiful view over the Kliprivier Nature Reserve and the prolific birdlife in the area.

“Not long after we moved in we were in the house when we heard noises outside on the patio early in the evening. The noises stopped and we didn’t investigate further until the morning. At the back of the house we have a gate which opens onto the nature reserve and we saw the lock had been broken and the gate was wide open and the palisade fence smashed. The electric fence was off. We contacted our security company and along with having our fences fixed, we beefed up our armed response.

“A few weeks ago I was out at work and my wife came home, fed the dogs and then went to my parents’ home to fetch our daughter. At 20:52 I had a call from Hercules Security informing me of our alarm being activated and minutes later another call that there was a panic alert.

“When I returned home a security guard from Hercules Security was outside our home and on entering the house found it had been ransacked and a TV and electrical goods had been taken. When I took a look outside, our neighbours’ prefab wall was broken down and the suspects had obviously deactivated and short-circuited the alarm to gain entry. They knew exactly how to get into our home.”

Mondeor SAPS arrived quickly and after taking a statement assisted in trying to close up the property.

The family has had most of it trees cut down so they can see what’s happening in their back garden.

“We’ve since learnt other homes in Denton Place have been robbed and we feel like sitting ducks because we border the nature reserve. According to the SAPS they aren’t able to enter the reserve to check out for criminal elements and it seems that no one can assist us in cleaning up the border of the reserve which backs onto our property.

“Our question is, who can help to make our properties safe? As the sun goes down, we dread another night of being broken into. We are even thinking of putting our property on the market. Beautiful views and birdlife don’t compensate for living in fear.”

Constable S E Mnguni, corporate communication officer at the Mondeor SAPS, says, “We have undertaken border patrols in the KNR and the last one was done at the beginning of April with an SAPS chopper flying over the reserve.”
