A FORMER journalist for Southern COURIER newspaper has also proved himself to be quite a funny man.
James Mahlokwane, aka Chomi Ya Jeso is one of the 24 emerging, talented comedians in the country and will be performing at this year’s Savanna Newcomer Showcase.
Taking place on May 19 at Soweto Theatre, each comedian will be given five minutes in front of the packed theatre to deliver the best comedy routine they’ve got, all in the hopes of being crowned at this year’s Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards (CCA’s) later on this year.
It’s always a hoot as newcomers stand proud, belt out their punchlines and relish in the applause of a sold-out crowd. Of course, you get the odd one or two that bomb too, but that’s all part of the fun.
As the first in a series of this year’s events rolled out by the CCA’s, The Savanna Newcomer Showcase is a platform created by longstanding comedy partners Savanna Premium Cider and the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards to give up-and-coming comedians their time to shine, and to give the industry an inkling of who to vote for.
The Savanna Newcomer Showcase party kicks off earlier in the outdoor precinct of the theatre with Kaya FM DJ’s spinning chilled Sunday beats and great food and drink, also included in your ticket.
“It’s all about creating an unmissable afternoon of comedy, new friendships and good times. This year we have gourmet food trucks and are creating an epic party buzz outside before the comedy starts indoors. It’s the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon,” said Diego Jacobs, Savanna’s brand activation manager.
This year’s instalment will be hosted by the hilarious Tsitsi Chiumye who won last year’s Savanna Newcomer of the Year Award as well as a SAFTA and is a rising star in SA comedy. Hailing from Limpopo he was singled out by South Africa’s greatest comedy export, Trevor Noah, to take part in the new comedy TV series, Trevor Noah Presents: NationWild. Tsitsi also appeared on BBC Arts Hour, which featured Spike Lee in the same season.

The pre-show party with food, drink and DJ’s starts at 2.30pm and the show starts at 4.30pm.
It’s sold out every year, so hurry and book your seats. Get your ticket at webtickets or Soweto Theatre for R250 and it includes a Savanna Premium Cider and a meal.
