Fidelity ADT issues urgent warning to businesses in Johannesburg south

Criminals in Johannesburg south are adopting a new tactic, pretending to be customers to rob businesses. Fidelity ADT issues a cautionary alert and offers essential safety measures for business owners to protect their establishments.

In a recent alert, Fidelity ADT has raised concern over a growing trend of criminals disguising themselves as customers in various regions of Johannesburg South.

Charnel Hattingh, group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT said these imposters target businesses, posing as patrons before revealing their true intentions, robbing establishments of valuables, including cash and cell phones.

“The most recent incident occurred on Turf Club Street in Turffontein, where three suspects entered a business under the guise of customers. They then brandished a firearm at the cashier, demanding access through the bulletproof door.

“Fortunately, the cashier’s quick thinking prevented the situation from escalating further, and the suspects fled the scene,” said Hattingh.

To combat this rising threat, Fidelity ADT offers the following tips and precautions for business owners:

• Controlled entrances help prevent overcrowding on your premises. Restrict movement at entrances and exits to your business for staff and customers.

• Be alert during opening and closing times. Always work in pairs to prevent being surprised or overpowered by criminals. Train your staff to ask for identification before allowing entry to the premises.

• Make sure all outside entrances and inside security doors have deadbolt locks. If you use padlocks, they should be steel and kept locked. Remember to remove serial numbers from your locks to prevent the duplication of unauthorised keys.

• Windows should have secure locks and burglar-resistant glass. Consider installing metal grates on all your windows except on display windows.

• Light the inside and outside of your business, especially around doors, windows, skylights, or other entry points. Consider installing covers over exterior lights and power sources to deter tampering.

• Always use the services of a reputable company when selecting security guards. Rotate the security guards and insist someone regularly vetted them.

• Keep your cash register in plain view from outside your business for the police to monitor during the day or at night. Leave it open and empty after closing.

• Make sure your safe is fireproof and securely anchored. Change your security password when an employee who had access to it leaves your business.

• Always invest in an alarm, CCTV and electronic article surveillance system that meets your security needs. Learn how to use your system and check the system daily. It is advisable to run a test when closing.

• Make sure that panic systems for staff are readily available.

When implemented diligently, these precautions can significantly enhance the safety and security of businesses in the face of this growing threat. Fidelity ADT emphasised the importance of vigilance and encouraged business owners to remain proactive in safeguarding their establishments and employees.
