Young leaders selected from 195 learners pledge to lead with integrity, respect and a commitment to making their school a welcoming space

Turffontein Primary School celebrated its elected mini prefects, who will assist educators in leading the school to greater heights, on March 18.

Out of 195 learners, only 19 Grade Three learners made the cut to this year’s circle of mini prefects.

The mini prefects’ pledge included, among others, a promise to be a good role model and a good listener. To lead with integrity, to use their skills to help others and to make their phase and school a positive, welcoming place for all.

Outlining the selection process, teacher Ntombi Twala said this is unusual because it doesn’t happen at other schools. “We have the best support in the school from the parents of the learners. This was not a one-day decision. It took us months to select these learners. We wanted to make sure the selection is correct.

“The selection was not only based on academics but on other factors as well. These learners will advocate for respect and integrity. Although they don’t have 100 per cent leadership skills, they will be developed. They are the ambassadors of our school. We expect nothing but the best. They need to maintain the standard of being good leaders at the school,” she said.
