Man shoots ex-girlfriend

A BRIGHTON Beach SAP detective pair was led on a high speed chase through Woodlands after a 35-year-old shot his ex-girlfriend three times on Monday, 16 September.

Two weeks after the man and his girlfriend broke up; he arrived at her workplace in Gardiner Street in Central Durban and shot her once in the arm and twice in the chest. A witness called the police hotline on 10111 with details of the number plate of the black VW Polo he fled in.

Sergeant Robert Jooste and Constable Samukelo Mamela of the Brighton Beach tracking and tracing unit heard the information being circulated over their radio. The man was reported to be travelling south towards Montclair, near the two officers, who were on patrol in South Coast Road.

With the general location of the man, they headed to Montclair and began a search. The man was soon spotted and a police pursuit ensued, ending in the man being boxed in in a field, near Nagel Square. A 9mm Norinco firearm, magazine and three rounds of ammunition were seized.

He was charged with attempted murder on 17 August and appeared in court on Wednesday, 18 September. He was remanded into police custody and will re-appear in court on Wednesday, 25 September, where bail will be opposed by the detective assigned to the case, Constable Xola Thwala from the Durban Central detective services branch.

The woman underwent emergency surgery and is recovering from her injuries.
