Strike turns violent
PETROL attendant strikes turned violent in South Coast Road when a woman was beaten by protesters for not joining the strike action.
The woman sustained severe injuries and was taken to hospital for further care. Two men were charged with public violence and appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on 13 September. They were subsequently released on bail of R500 each. The case has been postponed to 22 October.
Strikes throughout the country have turned violent as cases of violence and intimidation were also reported in Umlazi, Soweto and Isipingo. The petrol attendants strike has officially ended, with employers agreeing to an increase of R2 per hour. The deadlock in the automotive components industry has not yet been resolved.
