Drug scourge inspires poem
‘BE my BBF till death do us part’, poem about the dangers of drug use and peer pressure is making the rounds in local schools thanks to Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.
Six high schools in the Brighton Beach policing area were given a drug prevention brochure including the poem at the start of the fourth term. “We always provide literature to pupils on facts about drugs, but this brochure is presented in a poem format. It is difficult to relate to teenagers when they reach the stage where they think they know it all and want to try everything at once.”
The poem is based on research Capt Le Roux did on the personal experiences of rehabilitated drug addicts and people who have lost loved ones through drug use. “I also included my personal dealings with the youth who I monitored as a counsellor.
I am hopeful the teenagers will be able to relate to this poem, and realise they must be selective of the company they keep and the choices they make.”
She thanks ADT Security for sponsoring the 3,500 brochures and the schools for their involvement.
