Maths, science investment pays off

ENGEN’s Engen Maths and Science Schools (EMSS) attained its highest-ever national pass rate of 95%, with Fairvale and Ganges Secondary schools shining with a 100% pass rate.

The supplementary tuition programme for matric pupils helped its pupils beat the national average of 78% by 17% and achieve a bachelor pass rate of 78%, compared to the national average of 38%.

“Our 27-year-old EMSS programme keeps going from strength to strength. Over the past years we have seen an upward growth in the EMSS results and we believe this reflects the rewards of increased investment, as well as the participants’ hard work and dedication,” said Tasneem Sulaiman-Bray, Engen’s GM of corporate affairs.

Khanyisa Balfour, Engen group corporate social investment manager, added that the EMSS programme addresses a key skills shortage in the engineering and technical fields in South Africa.

Locally, Engen’s EMSS classrooms at Fairvale and Ganges Secondary school both achieved a pass rate of 100%, with Fairvale achieving the highest number of bachelor’s passes (90%) out of all nine EMSS classes in South Africa.

“Our effort in addressing critical skills shortages and growing a pool of future industry leaders is bearing fruit. But the real winners are the many pupils who get to pursue their dreams and the country as a whole, which needs their skills,” said Sulaiman-Bray.
