A month on, landslide damage untouched

ONE month after the landslide in Chipstead Avenue, little has been done to repair the roadway.

The SUN visited the site last week and noted that while bollards had been placed on either side of the landslide to limit access, little repair work has been down, and the road appears to have collapsed further.

Residents are up-in-arms over the lack of response and concerned about the safety of their homes and the structural damage to the road and embankment.

“The landslide is up against my property and I have cracks in the wall, which are getting worse by the day. Municipal officials came to repair to the waterpipe, but after that nothing has been done to repair the damage,” said Chipstead resident, Brenda Lester.

People were seen climbing over the debris and no municipal workers were on site. “It is a real concern. Sand was dumped on the site, but as it rains, more of the land is washed away and all the sand they dumped is gone already. Soon my wall will go the same as the road and my pool is alongside that. I want to know what they plan to do and when it will happen, because I phone and get reference numbers, but nothing happens. I am worried about my house being damaged as the hole widens,” said Lester.

A request was to the eThekwini Municipality for information on the when repairs would commence, but no response was received at the time of going to press.
