Caring helpers at crash scene embodied Tata’s rainbow nation dream

When the accident happened I momentarily lost consciousness.

EDITOR – I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the community of Montclair for helping me on Friday, 28 February when I was involved in a horrific car accident in Wood Road.

I was driving the Toyota Corolla that was badly hit by a Toyota Yaris.

When the accident happened I momentarily lost consciousness. However, I could hear comforting voices as I was being helped out of the car.

When I came to my senses, I found myself surrounded by friendly, caring people of all races. I remember very well the black woman who grabbed my handbag from the car and put it safely next to where I was seated while making calls to my family members; a white woman who immediately put a towel on my bleeding forehead; an Indian woman who brought me glucose water to drink; another giving me natural calming tablets; a white man collecting all my CDs and other documents from my car. What they did really touched my heart.

That was the true embodiment of a rainbow nation that the first president of the democratic South Africa, Nelson Mandela aspired for.

It would be wrong of me not to thank Montlclair SAPS and the emergency rescue services for their prompt response. They all arrived in a flash. The police officers and paramedics who attended the scene as well as the paramedics were all so professional yet caring. You really taught me what Batho Pele is all about.

Thumbs up guys. God bless you.
