Blaze speculation spreads like wildfire

A fire on the Bluff created a buzz on social media as the cause remains unclear.

RUMOURS about its origin spread faster than the fire that was put out in Garcin Place on the Bluff last night and questions still remain.

Shortly after 7pm ambulance and police sirens were heard echoing through the valley and residents were quick to take to social media and BBM alert groups to query the cause of the emergency. Rumours abounded, with reports of a house fire in Grays Inn Road or a bush fire in Van Riebeeck Park being the most widely disseminated.

While it has been confirmed an incident took place in Garcin Place, but what the said incident was, remains unclear. A respondent on the scene took to social media claiming they had attended a house fire that was allegedly caused by a petrol bomb. The attempt went awry however, and the small fire on the pavement was quickly doused.

Brighton Beach SAP was unavailable for comment, but KZN police media centre spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker police said police had attended a complaint, but no evidence of petrol bombing was found. He added that no case had been opened at Brighton Beach police station.

Bluff Community Orientated Policing (COP) members attended the scene. COP manager, Rake Jeeves said he had heard of the incident, but was not clear on what took place at the scene, having heard reports of both the attempted petrol bombing and a small bush fire.

The SUN visited the site this morning, where blackened marks show the extent of the damage to an area about three metres long on the verge adjacent to a house.
