Free food Fridays extends beyond lent
A Bluff family is doing what they can to help others in need.

A BLUFF families’ ‘free food Fridays’ has provided food to hundreds of people in need and they call on other people to do the same.
The Basdew family, who live in Hove Avenue, offered food to needy families as part of their charitable requirement of the lent period. “In the first few weeks we saw 80 to 100 people feed and by the end of lent, we were feeding up to 180. That was when we decided to keep it going. We couldn’t just stop providing when there was such an obvious need,” said father, Rainier Basdew
Like clockwork, every Friday at 4pm people arrive from as far afield as Montclair for the promise of food, which includes a hot meal, juice, dessert and sweets and chips for the children. Other community members have become involved in the operation by donating food money or assistance.
A woman, who asked not to be named, said it is the one day of the week she knows she has a guaranteed meal. “The people we help are unbelievably grateful. If more people get together and do this one day a week, then families in need will know they have a meal every day. We can all make a difference,” said Rainier.
